Briefly describe who the character is and their role in the novel.
The character that I have chosen is Zech Macivey. He is the second generation of the family in the book and the son of Tobias and Emma Macivey. Zech grew up in the wilderness in Florida alongside his father and mother. He was forced to grow up fairly quickly partially because his family was poor and had to rely on the survival skills of Tobias and Emma in order to make ends meat. Zechs father Tobias took Zech under his wing and taught him everything that he knew about hunting, riding, shooting, and how to survive out in the scrub and hammock in which they resided throughout their life. Zech played a vital role within the Macivey family, he was able to assist his father in maintaining the family cattle business and later was able to establish a once lost orange grove that Tobias once dreamed of owning before his death. Zech was able to keep the Macivey legacy alive and continue to gather cattle and produce oranges.
What is the relationship between the character and their environment and the natural world?
Zech had a strong relationship with his environment and the natural world. Growing up in Florida that was all that he knew. He had a strong love towards nature just as much as his father Tobias. The belief of the Maciveys was that nature was gods gift and was meant to be enjoyed by everyone, and that everyone has the right to do so. The fact that Zech was not able to read and right before he married Glenda comes to show how attached he was to his environment and how little he relied on anything else besides leading herds of cattle and doing anything necessary to help he and his family survive.

Where does this character experience a strong sense of place and what legacy will/did they leave behind for others?
Zech experienced a strong sense of place everytime he was drawn back to the cherokee village south of the hammock. From the moment he and his father struggle for the first time to find the village, all the up until he he would visit alone in order to see Toby and Tawanda. He developed a strong sense of place for where he was at. This also included Pay-Hay-Okee and the custard apple forest which zech loved so much. Zech left a great legacy purchasing Macivey land and leaving his son Sol with many riches.

How do you relate to this character?
I a sense i can relate to Zech in a sense that he would anything and everything for his father and mother. As long as something would benefit his family he would do everything in his power to do so. For Example, when Zech purchased land behind his fathers back, although his father did not approve of this, he still did it in order to benefit the Macivey family. Many of us can also relate to Zech's early life when he is trying to decide between Glenda and Tawanda. We can all say that at one point in our young lives we have been stuck in a pickle trying to decide which person is best for us.
